Workshop 1

Workshop 1 - March 24th 2021

---

An Introduction to Values-Based Practice and Ethical Decision Making

Aim

The aim of this workshop is to enhance the ability of students in delivering value based safe, effective and compassionate nursing care. Consideration will be given to a range of contemporary ethical and legal issues, which arise in practice in health and social care in its widest context.

Values are those principles that govern behaviours, and values-based practice has been described as a theory and skills base for effective healthcare decision-making where different (and hence potentially conflicting) values are in play. The emphasis is on good process rather than pre-set right outcomes, aiming to achieve balanced decision-making.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the workshop students should be able to:

1.     Critique the role of values-based care in nursing practice.

2.     Explore how values are linked to identity and clinical ethical decision making.

3.     Compare and contrast the competing perspectives involved in ethical decision making with due regard to all those with legitimate personal/societal interests.

4.     Integrate ethical principles into contemporary nursing practice, which recognises the underpinning values, attitudes and beliefs of recovery-oriented practice.

5.     Analyse the challenges from the exploration of contemporary ethical issues in health and social care.

The training methods used to achieve the learning outcomes will be: reflection, group discussion, presentation.

Workshop 1 will be held online in Teams. Those students that are accepted to participate in these studies will get an invitation to the site before the launch.
