Cultural differences in the following topics: nursing ethics in mental health nursing, in adult nursing, in paediatric nursing, in community nursing, in elderly care nursing and end-of-life care


Aim: to discuss and analyse the main ethical dilemmas and values conflicts which may be experienced by nurses working in mental health nursing, adult nursing, paediatric nursing, community nursing, in community nursing, elderly nursing and end-of-life nursing

Learning outcomes:

On completion of the workshop students should be able to:

  1. Know what are the main ethical considerations in nursing across each of the areas of mental health nursing, adult nursing, paediatric nursing, in community nursing, and elderly care nursing (with end-of-life issues), including main directions of research into these areas and current issues
  2. Be aware of and discuss differences and similarities across countries regarding nurses role in informing the patient about His/Her health, nursing procedures and obtaining the consent for nursing care
  3. Be aware of and discuss issues of negligence and how these relate to ethical care.  Investigate the management of negligence within nursing practice. 

Activity required before the workshops: together with your mates from national group, please, prepare the “picture” of the situation in your country regarding two aspects: 

(a) nurses role in informing the patient and obtaining consent in case of mental health nursing, adult nursing, paediatric nursing, in community nursing and elderly care nursing (with end-of-life issues).

(b) issues of negligence in nursing (failure of providing nursing care according to ethical standards), how these are reported and what is the procedure in your country in such cases.
